The NPG report analyzes the impact of current conservative stances on both reproductive healthcare and foreign aid policy, finding that each will likely result in decreased access to contraceptive and family planning resources for millions. There is simply no getting around this reality for the following reason: any population or other object which grows exponentially will eventually overtake the size of the universe, a physical impossibility, at least as we conceptualize physics.
Population Growth: Essay on Population Growth
The abundant, cheap energy provided by fossil fuelshas made it possible for humans to exploit a staggering varietyof resources, effectively expanding their resource base. Inparticular, the development of mechanized agriculture has allowedrelatively few farmers to work vast tracts of land, producing anabundance of food and making possible a wild growth ofpopulation.
All species expand as much as resources allow andpredators, parasites, and physical conditions permit. When aspecies is introduced into a new habitat with abundant resourcesthat accumulated before its arrival, the population expandsrapidly until all the resources are used up. In wine making, forexample, a population of yeast cells in freshly-pressed grapejuice grows exponentially until nutrients are exhausted-or wasteproducts become toxic (Figure 1).

For Malthus, the imbalance between the growth ofpopulation and means of subsistence might be corrected, from timeto time, through natural disasters, but the human species could,in principle, survive indefinitely. Malthus did not know that theuniverse is governed by the Second Law of Thermodynamics; he didnot understand the population dynamics of introduced species; andhe did not appreciate that humans, having evolved long after theresource base on which they now rely, are effectively anintroduced species on their own planet.
Even if world population could be held constant, inbalance with "renewable" resources, the creativeimpulse that has been responsible for human achievements duringthe period of growth would come to an end. And the spiralingcollapse that is far more likely will leave, at best, a handfullof survivors. These people might get by, for a while, by pickingthrough the wreckage of civilization, but soon they would have tolead simpler lives, like the hunters and subsistence farmers ofthe past. They would not have the resources to build great publicworks or carry forward scientific inquiry. They could not letindividuals remain unproductive as they wrote novels or composedsymphonies. After a few generations, they might come to believethat the rubble amid which they live is the remains of citiesbuilt by gods.

The use of extrasomatic energy, and especiallyenergy from fossil fuels, has made it possible for humans toexploit a wealth of resources that accumulated before theyevolved. This has resulted in population growth typical ofintroduced species (Figure 3).
The book An Essay on the Principle of Population ..
The system that sustains world population isalready under stress. The growth in per-capita energy use, whichhad been increasing continually since the advent of fossil fuels, began to slow down some twenty years ago -- and the acceleratingpace at which it has been slowing down suggests that there willbe no growth at all by the year 2000 (Figure 4). Agriculture isin trouble; it takes more and more fertilizer to compensate forlost topsoil (Ehrlich & Ehrlich, 1990, p. 92), and nearlyone-fifth of the world's population is malnourished (Corson,1990, p. 68). In fact, the growth rate of the earth's humanpopulation has already begun to fall (Figure 5).
